If you run, walk or bike the West Ashley Greenway, the stretch between Coburg Road and Farmfield Avenue is expected to reopen by this afternoon. The sewer main break on Tuesday, Nov. 3 closed that stretch and sent sewage toward the nearby marsh.

The Greenway has closed twice in about two weeks

  1. Oct. 20A sewer main break closes the same Greenway stretch.
  2. Nov. 3A second break happens just outside the earlier clamp.
  3. Nov. 4The Greenway closes between Coburg Road and Farmfield Avenue.
  4. Nov. 6The Greenway is expected to reopen by afternoon.
  5. Late 2027The new concrete-enclosed sewer tunnel extension is expected to open.

Crews replaced a 10-foot segment of pipe. 's Sarah Moody said the old pipe was ductile iron, which "doesn't really work well in marsh conditions." Spokesperson Mike Saia said four main breaks have hit this area in the last two years.

  • Replaced pipe: 10 feet, first installed in the 1980s
  • Main breaks here: four in the last two years
  • New tunnel: enclosed in concrete, expected late next year
